The Madison County 911 Dispatch Center received the report of a fire at 74 East Main St Street around 2140 hours on 03.23.2012. There was a report of taxpayers trapped on the 2nd floor of the 2 story mulit use commercial building which contained National Road Beer & Grill on the first floor. A local law enforcement officer had reportedly walked through the bar an hour prior to the fire recalling roughly 20-30 patrons of which all were safely evacuated along with another resident of an upstairs apartment.
The fire was reported to have started on 2nd floor in one of the five apartments of which the two victims were located. A Madison County medic transported on victim to the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center of whom is expected to recover, the 2nd victim whom was rescued from the 2nd floor was pronounced dead at the scene.
Firefighters appeared to have the upper hand on the General Alarm blaze of which, the building's structure & material presented a heavy fire load of which crews had battled to bring under control. The structure's roof had previously collapsed then around 2320 the fire reignited. Crews from West Jefferson Twp Fire Department, London Fire Department, Central Twp Joint Fire District, Norwich Twp Fire Department, Prairie Twp Fire Department, Jerome Twp Fire Department, Pleasant Twp Fire Department, Jackson Twp Fire Department, and Washington Twp Fire Department worked late into the early morning extinguishing the blaze.
